Pat has always had an interest in art. It escalated in his teens when he became involved in the local Winnipeg graffiti scene (since 1993). He knew while still in high school that he would go on to post secondary studies in art. He graduated with his BFA from the University of Manitoba in 2002. Pat has been involved and has worked with Graffiti Art Programming Inc. since its inception in 1998, first as the project coordinator for the st.Art program – an after school art program and then as the artistic director and curator of Graffiti Gallery. Through this association, he has been involved in numerous mural projects, both completed with traditional brush work, as well as aerosol. In the summer of 2003, he had a showing of his work in Basement in Vancouver, B.C. His works incorporates traditional art making mediums as well as the tools of graffiti such as aerosol, oil sticks and markers. Common themes in his works include the politics of using the tools and subject of graffiti in legal works. |
Pat Lazo finds inspiration in the graffiti subculture. His ongoing works deal with the conflict of using the tools of graffiti for “legal art” in conjunction with traditional art mediums. He has also been exploring the public acceptance of the medium on canvas, which is generally rejected on the streets. Traditional painting and collage techniques are combined with aerosol and oil sticks. |
