COLLECTIVE CHAOS: EN MASSE x GRAFFITI GALLERY

In November 2013, Graffiti Art Programming brought Jason Botkin and Jeremy Shantz of the En Masse Project to direct a large-scale, collaborative mural project covering the entire interior space of Graffiti Gallery, with En Masse’s signature black and white style. Collective Chaos was the final exhibit celebrating GAP’s 15th anniversary in 2013. The exhibit explored the ideas of individual versus collective authorship and introduced artists working in diverse mediums to each other’s work.

The 16 artists involved in Collective Chaos each brought their individual artistic styles and practices to the table, yet worked collaboratively to create a cohesive whole. The end result was the creation of a collective vision and a testament to the power of a collaborative arts practice. While elements of each artist’s individual practice remained visible, the final product was a work greater than any single artist could create on their own. The technical skills and creative strengths of each artist involved, contributed to a final product that could only be achieved through cooperation and collaboration.

14 Winnipeg artists involved in Collective Chaos: Matt Bohemier, Jay Cabredo, Nereo Eugenio, Gabrielle Funk, Brian Hunter, Takashi Iwasaki, Kenneth Lavallee, Pat Lazo, Shaun Morin, Rodrigo Pradel, Christian Proctor, Dany Reede, Patrick Skene, Julia Wake

Jeremy Shantz is a Montreal based, interdisciplinary, creative mind. Born in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Shantz received his BFA with honours at UBC-Okanogan and Emily Carr where he studied classical painting, sculpture and film. He now lives and works in Montreal and exhibits internationally.
