ID

November 24th, 2016 - February 10th, 2017

ID features the work of 8 emerging, Indigenous artists currently living in Winnipeg MB. The participating artists work in a diversity of mediums and styles. Each artist’s work focuses on exploring their personal identity and its role in their development as artists. All of the participating artists are either current or former participants of GAP’s youth programming initiatives, who are now at various stages in their careers as professional artists. Graffiti Art Programming was delighted to be able to work with guest curator and mentor, KC Adams for this exhibit.

The participating artists also discussed the work they created for the exhibit in a series of short artist talks prior to the reception.

Participating artists in ID include: Storm Angeconeb, Jessica Canard, Dakota Chambers-Hourie, Chad Crate, Misty Greyeyes, Teddy Head, René Marriott, and Chad Reeves.

CHAD CRATE (born 1989, Thompson, MB)

Chad is a drawer-painter who lives in Winnipeg, MB. He loves to make art that pokes fun at himself, friends, community, and media influences. He also simply likes to draw and paint.

Chad is mostly self-taught. He did, however, participate in the Urban Canvas Program at Graffiti Art Programming from 2009 - 2010. His work has previously been exhibited at Graffiti Gallery in a group show of artwork produced by Urban Canvas participants in 2010.

STORM ANGECONEB (born 1996, Winnipeg, MB)

Storm is a young, emerging visual artist from Lac Suel, FN. Since being introduced to GAP programs in 2014, Storm has had many opportunities to create and display her art around the city. She has participated in murals and mural mentorship programs, learning to adapt her skills to paint in diverse mediums on a range of surfaces from walls to light boxes. Birds often reoccur as a common motif in her work, symbolically representing herself in her art. Many of her pieces also reflect her First Nations background and the influences of her daily life in the city.

René Marriott is a young Indigenous artist born in Winnipeg, MB. He often works in acrylic and aerosol paint, but he also likes to experiment with all mediums to develop his versatility as an artist. He has participated in several large-scale art events, including Maple Wish Explore 150 at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, mural painting at MARCC Pop Up at the Fringe 2 years in a row, and an installation at Graffiti Gallery's "Peace Should Not Be This Fragile" exhibit. René's artwork represents who he is and who he aspires to be. In addition to his visual arts practice, René also creates music as a means of self-expression.

Jessica Canard is a multi-media visual artist with a focus on street art and murals. Born and currently based in Winnipeg, MB, Jessica has goals of traveling and making art internationally. Her roots are from Sagkeeng First Nation. Jessica uses her art practice to explore and reclaim her heritage, as well as using her art as a tool for self-reflection and growth, to engage the public, and to build stronger communities. She believes art is about bringing people together and creating positive change.

Artist Statement

I am a social practice artist, interested in social and economic issues faced by North America’s consumerist culture. My focus has been the investigation of the dynamic relationship between nature (the living) and technology (progress). I create aestheticized work that questions our present and future, I encourage my audience to think about how they can take action, in their own way, to affect social and environmental change. I create work that represents the human struggle to control our environment as well as the relationship we have over our excessive habit of consumption and conformity. Raised in a culture that emphasizes the wonders of technology yet still romanticizes nature and the natural world; I make sense of our present and future through my engaging work. I start with an idea and then choose a medium that best represents that idea. In the past I have worked in video, installation, drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, printmaking and kinetic art.

This clip features Guest Curator and Artistic mentor KC Adams from the ID Art Exhibition which ran from November 24/2016 to February 10/2017.
